This October, we’re inviting you to help spring clean the city
We all love our little city, and Nelson City Council always makes sure it looks pretty great. But we know it could look even better! We’re putting the call out to all property owners and retailers to show your pride by making the city really sparkle.
Pull on some rubber gloves
Grab a bucket of soapy water
Shine those windows
Sweep the footpath
Wash away the dirt and grime
Clean up graffiti tags
Weed, prune and plant garden spaces
See some new artworks come to life
To celebrate a job well done with Spring Clean Whakatū Nelson we’re holding The Great Picnic Day.
We’re inviting everyone to come along and be part of a fun community event. The picnic is old-fashion style, so it’s BYO food, drinks and picnic rug.
We’ll have some live music and most importantly, there’ll be games! Start practicing now for egg & spoon, three-legged races, gumboot throw, hula hoops and so much more. This will a grand day out for all the family. No need to rsvp, just come along!

Self Generated Projects
Fresh blooms are coming to RED Gallery! Suzy and the team are busy planting vibrant spring flowers and installing a free little library for all to enjoy.
Our ‘Angel Gardeners’ have identified some greens spaces that could do with some TLC. If you would like to volunteer with our ‘Angel Gardening’ team then drop us a line at ideas@whatifnelson.co.nz
Arthouse Architects will be gathering for a working bee as part of the Spring Clean Self-Generated projects. The team will focus on removing graffiti from the roller door, clearing weeds, and tidying up tagged areas to restore and enhance the space.
Residents of Nile Street are going green this October with two projects in the garden beds. They plan to enhance the spaces with appropriate planting and will adopt the spaces to ensure their success.
Get Involved
We're encouraging businesses and groups to initiate their own projects to support the campaign. It might be cleaning, planting, or a general tidy up - a little effort has big results in making our city look so much better.
Remember to let us know how you plan to contribute to the Spring Clean Whakatū Nelson initiative.
You can also join volunteer teams in enhancing our community spaces by revitalising gardens and removing graffiti.

Make/Shift Spaces is trialing this service for Private Property Owners based on a model that operates in Porirua by a not-for-profit organisation like us.
Make/Shift Spaces will invoice you for our efforts at a reasonable rate.

The Theatre Royal is getting into the Spring Clean spirit by sprucing up its outside lockbox, and we’re teaming up with a talented local artist to create a vibrant mini mural. Be sure to keep an eye out for this stunning new artwork—it’s going to be a fabulous addition!
Scott Construction, Placemakers and Bays Joinery are springing into action by supporting a major community art project on the hoarding outside a construction site on Nile Street.
